Skillful Nature

from Outdoor Edventures

School Partnerships

At Skillful Nature, we partner with educators to create meaningful outdoor learning experiences that support classroom instruction while helping students develop a deeper connection to the world around them.

Outdoor learning is enjoyable. When students are actively engaged, exploring new places, investigating real-world questions, and having fun, they often become more curious, more motivated, and more invested in their own learning.

Common Challenges

Many teachers recognize the value of outdoor learning but struggle to find the time needed to design meaningful field experiences. Developing lessons that connect outdoor activities to academic standards, preparing students before the trip, and creating follow-up activities afterward can require significant planning.

In addition, students may be missing instructional time in other classes while participating in a field experience. Teachers and administrators understandably want to ensure that time spent outside the classroom continues to support student learning.

How We Partner with Teachers

Skillful Nature was created to help educators bring meaningful outdoor learning into their curriculum without having to develop every lesson, activity, and assessment on their own. We work with teachers to design outdoor experiences that support learning goals across multiple subject areas whenever possible.

Every school program begins with a conversation. We work closely with teachers to understand their students, curriculum, learning goals, and practical constraints. No two classes are exactly alike, and no two field experiences should be either.

Effective outdoor learning requires more than selecting a destination. The most meaningful experiences support classroom learning before, during, and after students step into the field. By collaborating with teachers throughout the planning process, we help ensure that outdoor experiences become a meaningful extension of classroom learning rather than an interruption to it. At the same time, we want students to enjoy the experience. Learning, exploration, challenge, and fun work best when they are combined.

Because students are learning outside the classroom, we also look for opportunities to connect field experiences to multiple subject areas. A well-designed outdoor lesson may support science, mathematics, history, language arts, leadership development, and other learning goals at the same time. When appropriate, we are happy to work with multiple teachers to help create experiences that contribute to a broader range of curricular objectives.

  • We start with your learning goals.
  • We connect outdoor experiences to academic standards.
  • We help design pre-trip learning activities.
  • We facilitate meaningful field experiences.
  • We help connect the experience back to classroom learning afterward.

Learning Through Experience

Outdoor learning can take many forms. Depending on the age of the students, curriculum goals, available time, and learning objectives, programs may incorporate local hikes, field investigations, stewardship projects, natural history studies, geology explorations, outdoor skills instruction, astronomy activities, camping experiences, paddling programs, or other forms of field-based learning.

Students learn both the skills associated with the activity itself and the broader concepts that emerge from the experience. A hike may become a lesson in ecology, geology, history, mathematics, or creative writing. A stewardship project can also teach leadership, collaboration, responsibility, and environmental awareness.

A Field Experience in Action

Middle school students investigating historical artifacts during a field experience

This experience was developed in collaboration with a middle-school history teacher whose seventh-grade students were studying New Mexico history. Because students would be spending a full day outdoors, teachers from other subject areas also wanted opportunities for students to incorporate writing and mathematics into the experience.

Students were divided into two groups. One group participated in a service project for the local land-management agency while the second group explored a nearby mountain trail. After lunch, the groups switched activities so that every student participated in both the service project and the field investigation.

During the hike, students encountered artifacts representing different periods of New Mexico history. Upon discovering each artifact, students recorded observations and hypotheses in individual field journals. They then met in small groups to discuss their findings, compare ideas, and record their conclusions before continuing along the trail.

At the conclusion of the hike, students participated in a facilitated group discussion in which they shared evidence, compared interpretations, and worked together to determine the most likely historical context for each artifact.

Back in the classroom, the learning continued. Students used mathematical ratios to create a historically accurate timeline showing where each artifact fit within the periods they had studied. They also selected one artifact and wrote a creative story inspired by its historical setting and use.

What began as a hike became an opportunity to integrate history, writing, mathematics, observation, discussion, critical thinking, and collaborative problem-solving into a single learning experience. The field investigation supported the classroom curriculum while giving students the opportunity to actively engage with the places and stories they were studying.
