Activities & Edventures
Outdoor learning can take many forms. A hike on a local trail, a weekend campout, a backpacking expedition, a river adventure, a stewardship project, or a climbing experience can each create opportunities for learning, exploration, challenge, service, discovery, and fun.
Skillful Nature currently supports a variety of outdoor education experiences including hiking, camping, backpacking, river adventures, climbing, rappelling, stewardship projects, and field-based learning experiences. Programs are developed around available staffing, equipment, participant needs, and educational goals.
At Skillful Nature, outdoor experiences are more than recreational activities. We use them as platforms for developing practical skills, exploring the natural world, strengthening leadership and teamwork, practicing stewardship, and building confidence through direct participation.
What Is an Edventure?
An Edventure combines outdoor adventure with meaningful learning. Participants learn by doing. Rather than simply observing from the sidelines, they actively engage with the places they visit, the skills they practice, and the people around them.
An Edventure may focus on outdoor skills, ecology, geology, astronomy, leadership development, stewardship, natural history, or other learning goals. Most importantly, learning should be enjoyable. Curiosity grows when people are engaged, challenged, and having fun.
Types of Edventures
Hiking & Trail Exploration
Trails provide opportunities to explore landscapes, observe plants and wildlife, practice outdoor awareness, study local geology and ecology, investigate natural and cultural history, and develop confidence traveling through the outdoors.
Camping & Outdoor Living
Camping programs provide opportunities to develop practical outdoor living skills while learning and working together in a shared outdoor environment. Participants may learn campsite organization, shelter systems, outdoor cooking, camp sanitation, Leave No Trace practices, and the responsibilities required to live comfortably outdoors.
Camping may serve as the primary focus of a program or as part of a larger experience such as a backpacking trip, river adventure, stewardship project, or field study.
Backpacking & Expedition Travel
Backpacking combines outdoor skill development with journey-based learning. Participants may learn trip planning, equipment selection, route finding, campcraft, risk management, leadership, self-reliance, and teamwork while traveling through natural landscapes.
River Adventures
River adventures may range from introductory paddling experiences to multi-day expeditions. Participants may develop paddling skills, learn about river systems, explore aquatic ecosystems, practice teamwork, and experience life along the water.
Some river programs may include overnight camping and outdoor living skills as part of the broader expedition experience.
Climbing & Challenge-Based Adventures
Climbing, rappelling, and challenge-based activities provide opportunities to develop technical skills, communication, leadership, trust, confidence, judgment, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities in supportive learning environments.
Stewardship Projects & Service Learning
Stewardship experiences connect participants to the places they visit through service, conservation, and responsible recreation. These programs help develop environmental awareness, leadership, civic responsibility, and a sense of care for shared resources.
Areas of Exploration
A single Edventure can support many different learning goals. The same camping trip, river expedition, backpacking journey, or hiking experience may incorporate several of the following areas of exploration.
Nature & Ecology
Explore relationships among plants, wildlife, ecosystems, habitats, biodiversity, and environmental processes through direct observation and field investigation.
Geology & Earth Science
Investigate rocks, minerals, landforms, erosion, volcanism, and the natural forces that have shaped New Mexico's remarkable landscapes.
Astronomy & Night Sky Learning
Explore constellations, celestial motion, astronomy concepts, scientific observation, dark skies, and cultural connections to the night sky.
Watersheds & River Systems
Learn about rivers, watersheds, aquatic ecosystems, water resources, and the role water plays in both human and natural communities.
Natural History & Sense of Place
Discover how geology, ecology, culture, and history interact to shape the places we visit and the stories those landscapes tell.
Outdoor Skills & Leadership Development
Topics may include outdoor living skills, navigation, shelter systems, cooking, campcraft, communication, teamwork, leadership, judgment, decision making, risk management, self-reliance, and responsible recreation.
Activities and Learning in Combination
No two Edventures are exactly alike. The same activity can support many different learning goals, and the same learning theme can appear across many different activities.
Activities provide the setting for learning. Program goals, participant interests, available time, location, and group needs help determine what a particular experience emphasizes.
- Backpacking Expeditions may incorporate ecology, geology, astronomy, leadership development, outdoor skills, stewardship, and self-reliance.
- River Adventures may incorporate paddling skills, watershed studies, river ecology, camping, teamwork, stewardship, and expedition living skills.
- Camping Programs may incorporate outdoor living skills, cooking, astronomy, ecology, leadership, observation, community building, and responsible recreation.
- Hiking Experiences may incorporate geology, natural history, ecology, observation skills, navigation, and environmental stewardship.
- Climbing & Challenge-Based Adventures may incorporate communication, trust, leadership, teamwork, judgment, and technical skill development.
Every program is built around the idea that outdoor experiences can serve as meaningful platforms for learning, growth, and discovery.
A Hands-On Learning Experience
Skillful Nature programs are not guided tours or catered outdoor experiences.
Participants are expected to actively contribute to the experience. Depending on the activity, they may help set up camp, prepare meals, wash dishes, care for equipment, clean campsites, support teammates, and share responsibility for the success of the group.
These responsibilities are not simply chores. They are part of the learning process. Through participation, people develop practical life skills, confidence, teamwork, leadership, judgment, stewardship, and self-reliance.
Leave No Trace principles and environmental stewardship are integrated throughout outdoor programs regardless of the specific activity involved.
Equipment, Capacity & Logistics
Skillful Nature maintains equipment and resources that support a variety of outdoor education programs. Current resources include backpacking equipment, climbing equipment, river equipment, camping systems, safety equipment, and expedition infrastructure that help make these experiences possible.
These resources allow many participants to take part in outdoor learning experiences without needing to own specialized outdoor equipment.
Program capacity varies depending on the activity, location, available equipment, staffing, participant ages, and educational objectives. Some activities can accommodate larger groups than others, and not every activity is appropriate for every group.
Outdoor programs require collaboration between Skillful Nature and the participating school, organization, family group, community partner, or sponsoring organization.
Depending on the activity and participant ages, partners may be responsible for transportation, adult chaperones, permissions, participant supervision support, and other logistical needs. Specific expectations are discussed during program planning.
Building the Right Experience
Every group has different goals. Some may want to focus on ecology, geology, or astronomy. Others may be more interested in leadership, stewardship, camping skills, backpacking, paddling, or challenge-based learning.
Programs are developed collaboratively to create experiences that are educational, enjoyable, safe, meaningful, and appropriate for the participants involved.
